What is it?
Chronic respiratory complaints, stable bronchial asthma and recurring infections of the upper and lower airways make everyday breathing harder. Low-irritant, clean air can bring relief.
Romania is exceptionally rich in salt deposits, and its underground salt mines hold a remarkably stable microclimate: a constant temperature of roughly 12–16 °C, moderate humidity of around 50–80%, very little dust, pollen or airborne germs, and a fine salt aerosol suspended in the air. This clean, even, low-allergen environment has been used for respiratory cures — speleotherapy — for decades.

How the natural remedy is thought to work
Speleotherapy is thought to act through several factors at once. The fine sodium-chloride aerosol that guests breathe deep underground may help thin bronchial mucus and support the airways' own cleaning mechanism (the mucociliary escalator), making it easier to clear congestion. At the same time, the air is naturally poor in pollen, dust and germs, giving over-reactive airways a genuine rest from the everyday triggers that provoke inflammation and wheeze. The constant cool temperature, high mineral content and calm, quiet setting round out the effect. These mechanisms are plausible and long reported by patients — but, as below, they are not yet confirmed by high-quality trials.
What does the evidence say?
The evidence base is genuinely thin, and it is fair to say so. A Cochrane systematic review of speleotherapy for asthma could identify only a handful of small studies of modest quality — none of them robust randomised controlled trials — and therefore could not draw a reliable conclusion about whether speleotherapy works. Broader reviews of halotherapy and salt-mine treatment reach a similar verdict: many people describe subjective relief and easier breathing, but rigorous proof of a lasting effect is still lacking, and larger, well-designed trials are needed.
Our honest position: a salt-mine stay is a pleasant, low-risk, complementary measure that some people find genuinely soothing for chronic airway complaints — but it is not a proven treatment and must never replace prescribed asthma or COPD medication. Keep your inhaler with you and have a doctor confirm a stay is appropriate.

Good to know before you go
Typical cure duration
A typical medical course involves daily sessions of one to several hours underground over about two to three weeks; some mines also offer shorter wellness visits. Dedicated speleotherapy centres such as Târgu Ocna run longer, structured programmes.
Contraindications
Speleotherapy is not suitable during acute respiratory infections, with unstable or severe asthma, with active tuberculosis, with severe heart or lung failure, or where claustrophobia makes an enclosed underground space distressing. The cool underground air can also provoke cold-sensitive asthma in some people. Have a doctor assess suitability, especially for asthma, before you travel.
