Băile Herculane lies in Caraș-Severin County, in the Banat region, where the river Cerna winds through a narrow, wooded valley. All around rises the Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park — one of the most biodiverse protected zones in Romania.
The town is among the oldest spa towns in the world: the Romans founded here, around the 2nd century AD, Ad Aquas Herculi Sacras, dedicated to the demigod Hercules. Herculane experienced its great heyday in the 19th century under the Habsburgs — it became the fashionable spa town of the imperial and royal elite. From that era comes the magnificent Austro-Hungarian spa architecture, today partly lovingly restored, partly decaying — a faded charm that makes the valley unmistakable.
