At a glance

Băile Felix is Romania's most visited thermal spa — just a few kilometres from Oradea. The mildly radioactive, oligomineral thermal water (up to ~48 °C at the source) has been used since the 18th century, above all for rheumatic and degenerative joint conditions. Modern hotels with their own spa departments, aquaparks and the famous Nymphaea thermal park make it attractive all year round — families included.

01Overview & history

Băile Felix lies around 9 km south-east of Oradea, in western Romania near the Hungarian border. It is the country's largest thermal spa and is open all year round. The healing effect of the springs was documented as early as the 18th century; the place is named after the monk Félix Helcher, who developed the warm waters in the 18th century.

A botanical curiosity are the thermal lakes with the rare water lily Nymphaea lotus var. thermalis, a pre-glacial (Tertiary) relict that survived the ice ages thanks to the warm water and thrives in this thermal area. Today spa hotels, thermal parks and aqua-centres line up one after another — from the classic cure setting to the modern family adventure pool.

02Remedy & water composition

The thermal water of Băile Felix is oligomineral, mildly radioactive and sulphurous, with source temperatures between roughly 20 °C and 48 °C. This combination relaxes the muscles and joints and promotes circulation.

08FAQ

Do you need a doctor's referral for a cure?
Not for wellness and thermal-bath visits. For medical spa treatments (physio- and electrotherapy) an on-site medical consultation is customary; many hotels have their own spa doctors.
When is the best time to visit?
Year-round, as the thermal water stays warm even in winter. May to September is the most pleasant; the aquaparks then keep full opening hours.
How far is the nearest airport?
Oradea Airport (OMR) is about 15 km away; Debrecen (Hungary) roughly 80 km and Cluj-Napoca about 160 km.
Is Băile Felix suitable for families with children?
Yes. Several aquaparks with slides and warm pools (including President and Nymphaea in Oradea) make the place attractive for families too.
