The former "Pilot" mine housed the country's first underground sanatorium from 1974. Today the vast salt chambers hold an underground church, playgrounds and a café, along with a treatment area for speleotherapy. Above ground, a spa park and salt lakes invite you to stroll.

Târgu Ocna's central remedy is the salty, ion-rich underground air (speleotherapy): a constant microclimate of around 13–15 °C at about 70% humidity, rich in sodium, chlorine, potassium, magnesium and CO₂, and free of strong air currents. Salt brine is also available. Its effect is considered anti-inflammatory, bronchodilating and cough-relieving; the therapy relies on breathing stimulated by movement (walking and exercise in the underground halls).
