01Overview & history

Ocna Șugatag lies in Maramureș County in northern Romania, in the Maramureș basin at about 490 m, about 20 km from Sighetu Marmației. The town is a recognised balneoclimatic resort that developed around several salt lakes.

These lakes formed on the sites of old salt mines: when the former mining chambers collapsed, the hollows filled with strongly salty water. Over time, traditional salt extraction gave way to a spa resort, where lake water, healing mud and the mild mountain climate are now used for rest and treatments.

02Remedy & water composition

The central remedy is the strongly chloride-sodium (salty) lake water of the salt lakes, complemented by healing mud. Added to this is a mild, subalpine mountain climate that supports the cure — more on this under the Salt remedy.
