01Overview & history
Turda lies in Cluj County, in the heart of Transylvania, around 30 km south of Cluj-Napoca. The town is world-famous for Salina Turda — one of the most spectacular salt mines in the world. Today its vast underground chambers hold an underground lake with rowing boats, a Ferris wheel and an amphitheatre; the mine has repeatedly been named one of the most extraordinary sights in the world.
At the same time, Turda has a long spa tradition: at the salt lakes of Durgău, the spa of “Băile Sărate” grew up, developed from around 1840 by the physician Iosif Hanko (Amenajarea Lacul Roman). The salt mine and salt lakes make Turda a destination that combines speleotherapy with classic balneotherapy.
02Remedy & water composition
The central remedy is the constant, low-germ and low-allergen salty underground air of the mine (halo-/speleotherapy). Added to this are the chloride-sodium, bicarbonate, calcium and magnesium salt lakes of Durgău as well as sapropelic healing mud — more on this under the Salt remedy.
