Salt & salt mines

Salt lakes for bathing with high buoyancy, and salt mines whose air supports the respiratory tract.

01What is salt as a remedy?

Salt is used in two ways in Romania's spa tradition. First, as a salt lake: the highly saline water has a high buoyancy, in which the body is carried effortlessly. Second, as a salt mine for speleotherapy — here you breathe in the constantly cool, humid and salt-rich air of the underground salt mines.

Romania has extensive salt deposits. Well-known salt mines include Praid, Turda, Slănic Prahova, Târgu Ocna and Cacica — many of them accessible today as cure and visitor mines.

02Effect & application

In both forms, salt is traditionally recommended for:

  • Buoyancy in the salt lake — takes the strain off the joints and spine while bathing.
  • Salt-rich air — speleotherapy in the mine supports the respiratory tract.
  • Skin care — saline solutions are valued for irritated skin.
  • Recovery — the cool, calm climate of the salt mines has a relaxing effect.

03For which conditions?

Salt and salt mines are used above all for respiratory and skin complaints:

05FAQ

What is speleotherapy in a salt mine?
In speleotherapy you spend time inside an old salt mine. The constantly cool, humid and salt-rich air is traditionally used to support the respiratory tract. Romania has numerous such salt mines, including Praid, Turda and Slănic Prahova.
Why do you float more easily in salt lakes?
The high salt content increases the density of the water and therefore its buoyancy. The body is carried more, taking the strain off the joints and spine — much like the principle of the Dead Sea.
