Sovata
The heliothermal Bear Lake and sapropelic healing mud — traditionally recommended for gynaecology and rheumatism.
At a glance
Sovata lies in Transylvania and is famous for Bear Lake (Lacul Ursu) — one of the largest heliothermal salt lakes in Europe. A thin freshwater layer lets the sun through and stores the heat in the deeper, more saline layers. Together with the sapropelic healing mud, the town is traditionally recommended for gynaecological complaints and degenerative rheumatism.

01Overview & history
Sovata lies in Mureș County, in the heart of Transylvania, embedded in a wooded salt-mountain landscape. The town owes its reputation to Bear Lake, which formed at the end of the 19th century through the collapse of salt-bearing ground and quickly became known as a healing spa.
What makes it special is heliothermy: rainwater forms a lighter freshwater layer on top of the heavy salt water. This layer acts like a glass roof — the sun penetrates, the heat stays trapped and heats the deeper layers, which store it. So in summer the lake becomes pleasantly warm at the surface.
02Remedy & water composition
The two central remedies are the highly saline water of Bear Lake and the sapropelic healing mud (peloid) from the lake bed. Around the town lie further salt lakes such as Lacul Aluniș and Lacul Negru.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Water type | Highly saline salt lake (chloride-sodium) |
| Distinctive feature | Heliothermy (heat storage at depth) |
| Peloid | Sapropelic healing mud |
| Other lakes | Lacul Aluniș, Lacul Negru |
