01What is healing mud?
Healing mud — known technically as peloid — is a natural, fine-grained material that is warmed and applied for therapeutic purposes. There are two main types:
- Sapropelic mud — lake sediment from the bed of saline lakes — for example at Lake Techirghiol — rich in minerals and sulphur compounds.
- Peat — formed from plant deposits, rich in organic humic substances.
02Effect & application
Applied as a pack or a full bath, healing mud is traditionally recommended for:
- Deep warmth — Peloid retains warmth for a long time and releases it slowly to the joints and muscles.
- Minerals — Minerals and active substances are released through the skin.

What is the difference between sapropelic mud and peat?
Sapropelic mud is a sediment from the bed of saline lakes (e.g. Techirghiol), rich in minerals and sulphur compounds. Peat forms from plant deposits in bogs and is rich in organic humic substances.
How does a mud pack work?
The warmed healing mud is applied to the joints or back and left to work for about 20 minutes. It is then washed off, often followed by a rest period. The application and its duration should be agreed with a doctor.
