01Overview & history
Amara lies in the Bărăgan lowland of Ialomița County, in the historic region of Wallachia (Muntenia), only a few kilometres from the county town of Slobozia. It takes its name from Lake Amara, a shallow salt lake whose name derives from the Romanian word for "bitter" — a reference to the water's high salt and sulphate content.
The resort ranks among the most important mud spas in Wallachia. A spa park, open-air baths and treatment facilities stretch around the lake; the wide Danube plain is not far away. Treatments focus on the warm months, when mud, salt water and sun are used outdoors.
02Remedy & composition
Amara's central remedy is the sapropelic healing mud — a black, fine-grained lake mud (peloid) formed on the lake bed over long periods. It is complemented by the strongly salt- and sulphate-rich lake water. The classic cure combines mud packs, bathing in salt water and sunbathing — a traditional triad of open-air balneology.

Do you need a doctor's referral for a mud cure?
Not for bathing and wellness visits. For medical spa treatments (prescribed mud packs, physio- and electrotherapy) an on-site medical consultation is customary; the spa facilities have their own spa doctors.
When is the best time to visit?
The warm months from May to September, as mud packs, salt-water bathing and sunbathing mostly take place outdoors. During this period the spa keeps full opening hours.
How far is the nearest airport?
Bucharest International Airport (Henri Coandă / OTP) is about 120–130 km away; the county town of Slobozia is only a few kilometres away.
How does Amara differ from a thermal spa?
Amara is not a thermal spa but a mud and salt-lake resort. The focus is on the sapropelic healing mud and the salt-rich lake water — not warm spring water.
