At a glance

Sărata-Monteoru is one of Romania's storied historic spas — in the Buzău Subcarpathians, in Buzău County, close to the city of the same name. In the late 19th century, during the oil boom, it was developed into an elegant spa by the Monteoru family; today it is quiet and little promoted. The cure rests on two natural remedies: strongly salt-rich mineral water with a high salt concentration and sapropelic healing mud, a prized natural remedy. The place is traditionally recommended above all for rheumatic complaints, for rehabilitation, and for skin and gynaecological complaints — and the treatments are considerably cheaper than in the major resorts.

01Overview & history

Sărata-Monteoru lies in the Subcarpathians of Buzău County, in the historic region of Wallachia (Muntenia), only a few kilometres from the city of Buzău. It ranks among Romania's storied historic spas; its salt springs and healing mud have long been used.

Its heyday came towards the end of the 19th century, when the region flourished thanks to oil extraction. The Monteoru entrepreneurial family developed the resort into an elegant bathing and holiday place with villas, parks and treatment facilities. Today the place has remained quiet and is little promoted — which makes it an authentic, affordable destination for a classic cure.

02Remedy & composition

The two central remedies of Sărata-Monteoru are the strongly salt-rich mineral water with a high salt concentration and a prized sapropelic healing mud. The classic cure combines mud packs and mud baths with salt baths — a traditional pairing of balneo- and peloid therapy.

08FAQ

Do you need a doctor's referral for a mud cure?
Not for bathing and wellness visits. For medical spa treatments (prescribed mud packs, physio- and electrotherapy) an on-site medical consultation is customary; the spa facilities have their own spa doctors.
When is the best time to visit?
Above all the warm months from May to September, as mud packs, salt-water bathing and sunbathing mostly take place outdoors. During this period the spa keeps full opening hours.
How far is the nearest airport?
Bucharest International Airport (Henri Coandă / OTP) is about 130 km away; the county town of Buzău is only a few kilometres away.
Why is Sărata-Monteoru so little known?
After its heyday around 1900 the place was barely promoted and has remained quiet. That is exactly what makes it today an authentic and affordable destination for a classic mud and salt cure.
