Ocna Sibiului lies in Sibiu County, in Transylvania, just a few kilometres north of Sibiu (Hermannstadt). Salt was mined here for centuries; when the old mines collapsed and filled with groundwater, today's landscape of around 52 salt lakes formed. The lakes reach depths of roughly 20 to 140 m.
This historic salt-mining landscape became a spa and climatic resort. The sedative hill topoclimate, the highly saline lakes and the healing mud have long made the town a popular destination for cure and recreation stays.
02Remedy & water composition
The central remedy is the exceptionally saline water of the lakes. The special feature is the heliothermal effect: the salt-rich deeper layers store the sun's heat. While the surface temperature is around 24 °C, at roughly 1.5–2 m depth it can reach about 40 °C in summer. The high salinity makes the body float at the surface. There is also sapropelic healing mud and the Horea mineral spring.
