Băile Balvanyos sits in Covasna County in Transylvania, in the Szekler Land on the southern slope of the Bodoc Mountains, in the heart of the Carpathian arc, around 67 km north-east of Sfântu Gheorghe. The region's volcanic past has left an extraordinary density of mineral springs and gas vents here. Balvanyos has been recognised as a permanent spa resort for balneotherapy since 1938.
Above the resort stand the ruins of Balvanyos Castle, and the surroundings hold several natural highlights — Saint Anne's Lake, Romania's only crater lake, and the neighbouring spa town of Băile Tușnad. Its quiet, sedative bioclimate makes Balvanyos a place for recovery away from the big tourist crowds.
02Remedies & composition
Balvanyos has numerous mineral springs — iron-rich, bicarbonate, chloride, calcium and sodium, carbonated and hypotonic. Alongside these come natural post-volcanic mofettes, from which carbon-dioxide- and hydrogen-sulphide-rich gases emerge. All this is complemented by a sedative mountain bioclimate.
Especially famous is the „Puturosu“ cave (Peștera Puturosu / sulphur cave) in the Ciomat-Puturosu massif at around 1052 m — an old sulphur gallery with some 3000 m³ of gas emerging daily. It is regarded as one of the most effective natural dry mofettes in Europe.
