01What is a mofette?
A mofette is a natural post-volcanic dry-gas bath. Pure carbon dioxide (CO₂) escapes from the ground — an echo of the former volcanism of the Eastern Carpathians. The key difference from a thermal bath: the guest does not bathe in water but stands, clothed, in the gas. The CO₂ is heavier than air and collects in a basin or room, so that it surrounds the legs and lower body.
The gas is absorbed through the skin. Mofettes are a speciality of the Carpathian arc and are especially widespread in Romania in the Covasna region.
02Effect & application
The CO₂ dry-gas bath is traditionally recommended for:
- Peripheral circulation — CO₂ widens the small blood vessels and stimulates circulation.
- Cardiovascular system — traditionally used to support circulatory disorders.
- Absorption through the skin — no strain from wet bathing, well suited to rehabilitation stays.
- Application — short stays in the gas basin, always after medical clearance and under supervision.

Do you bathe in water in a mofette?
No. A mofette is a dry-gas bath: the guest stands, clothed, in a basin filled with natural CO₂. The gas is heavier than air and collects at the bottom; the CO₂ is absorbed through the skin.
Is a mofette suitable for everyone?
Mofettes act on the cardiovascular system and should therefore be cleared with a doctor before use. Because of the suffocation risk posed by the heavy CO₂, they may only be used under supervision and in accordance with the facility's rules.
