Băile Tușnad
Romania's smallest town — natural mofettes, carbonated mineral water and a tonic mountain climate for the heart, circulation and nervous system.
At a glance
Băile Tușnad is Romania's smallest town — a spa resort in the Szekler Land, set on the Olt and enclosed by the wooded slopes of the Harghita and Bodoc mountains. Founded as a resort in 1842, with springs already mentioned in the 19th century, it combines three healing factors: natural mofettes (post-volcanic CO₂ dry-gas baths), carbonated mineral waters and a stimulating, tonic mountain climate. Băile Tușnad is traditionally regarded as a spa for the heart and circulation and the nervous system.

01Overview & history
Băile Tușnad lies in Harghita County in Transylvania, more precisely in the Szekler Land, in the valley of the Olt between the Harghita mountains to the west and the Bodoc mountains to the east. With only a few thousand inhabitants, it is the smallest town in Romania. The area's mineral springs were already mentioned in the 19th century; the town was founded as a resort in 1842.
The whole region is part of the volcanism of the Eastern Carpathians — the source of the numerous gas vents and carbonated springs. Surrounded by dense coniferous and deciduous forests, Băile Tușnad grew into a quiet resort, its bath houses, villas and sanatoriums nestled against the mountain slopes.
02Remedies & composition
The healing power of Băile Tușnad rests on three factors: natural mofettes — post-volcanic CO₂ dry-gas baths, linked to the volcanism of the Eastern Carpathians — carbonated (carbogaseous) sodium-chloride and bicarbonate mineral waters, and a stimulating, tonic subalpine mountain climate. In the mofette the guest „bathes“ fully clothed in the rising gas: the CO₂ is absorbed through the skin, widens the small blood vessels and stimulates circulation.
| Property | Detail |
|---|---|
| Main remedy | Natural mofettes (CO₂ dry gas) |
| Water type | Carbonated, sodium-chloride and bicarbonate mineral waters |
| Climate | Stimulating, tonic subalpine mountain climate |
