01Overview & history
Slănic Moldova lies in the Moldavia region (Bacău County), on the eastern slope of the Eastern Carpathians at about 530 m in the valley of the Slănic stream. Thanks to its elegance and its healing waters, the town has long carried the byname “Pearl of Moldavia” (Perla Moldovei).
The mineral springs were discovered in 1801; the first bathing facilities appeared from 1877. A fashionable 19th-century spa then grew up, with historic villas and drinking halls. At the world exhibitions in Paris, Vienna and Frankfurt the waters won prizes and were compared with those of Karlsbad (Karlovy Vary), Vichy and Aix-les-Bains.
