01Overview & history
Pucioasa lies in Dâmbovița County, in the Wallachia region (Muntenia), in the Ialomița Valley in the Subcarpathians at around 350 m. The town's name comes from “pucioasă”, the Romanian word for sulphur — a direct nod to the sulphurous springs to which the place owes its reputation.
The healing effect of the sulphur springs was analysed between 1821 and 1828; the first public bathing pavilion was built in 1834. Pucioasa was presented at the 1873 Vienna World Exhibition and officially declared a spa town in 1930 — giving the place nearly 200 years of cure tradition.
