Borsec lies in Harghita County, in eastern Transylvania, nestled in the coniferous forests of the Eastern Carpathians at an altitude of around 900 m. It is one of the oldest and best-known spa towns in Romania and is famous above all for its mineral water.
As early as the 18th and 19th centuries, Borsec water was bottled and exported across Europe; the quality of the springs earned the town the nickname "Queen of Mineral Waters" (Romanian Regina apelor minerale). From the Belle Époque come historic drinking halls and elegant villas that still shape the charm of the classic cure resort — many of them are gradually being restored.
